I feel like I can die happy after watching
The Innocent Man (
Nice Guy) final episode 20. I have been stressing over what tragedy will torment my beautiful Ma Roo-sshi and Eun Gi-yah when this show ends, but my fears were unfounded. I know I am being dramatic about this, but I am in a very vulnerable state right now because I literally just finished watching it. As I went back quickly and gathered a few screen caps of the final scene (through which I wept loudly) I began to cry as I watched it again. Will I be watching
The Innocent Man a second time? ABSOLUTELY.

When this episode began with Eun Gi rejecting Ma Roo's prosal to run away together, I started to feel doom. Things seemed to get worse and worse in the first half of the episode (I really loved Ma Roo's speech to Han Jae Hee about wanting to live) as Ma Roo began to look like death, and Jae Hee continued to stand her ground about not taking responsibility. That all turns around, though, as Eun Gi learns about Ma Roo's ill-health and runs to him. This is when the ending really begins. Finally, my question is answered about the tunnel collision, also. Ma Roo wanted to end his painful existence and saw a chance in Eun Gi's punishment. How these two came to find love within each other is a beautiful miracle. And I, swear on the Bible, just cried as I wrote that last sentence.

In the concluding scenes of this glorious final episode (Han Jae Hee turns herself in, Jae Gil and Choco end up together), we find Eun Gi working at a bakery in a beautiful spot overlooking the river and Ma Roo was a Doctor just down the street. We also discover that after Ma Roo's surgery he lost his memory (this is not the eye-rolling type of memory loss typically found in a Kdrama, it is Ma Roo's chance at a new life and what he had prayed for). Eun Gi and Ma Roo circle around each other like cautious children who have crushes, and it is so lovely to watch the innocent new relationship develop. What I love about that end is that Eun Gi, who remembers all the pain from the past, is able to forgive and trust again (a divine miracle for what she experienced), and Ma Roo is able to erase the guilt he carried for everyone throughout his whole life and find happiness. "Now, I am happy," Ma Roo says. Now, I too, am happy.

I don't get where the little girl that calls Eun Gi Unni came from.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure either. I am guessing she was just a neighborhood girl or something. Also, did you notice if they had moved? I think they were in a different area, where the bakery and the Ma Roo's office were. I loved the end, but it feel a little bit rushed, I suppose.

DeleteMaru did not lose his memory.. he just lost to recognize people called progacia or something .. but he remembers everything.. the one talking in the background is maru which is in the present already. He remembers everything, If you will ask me if he did not look who is eun gi and the others, its because that's his wish He wanted to have a new life first so he studied medicine and then look who is eungi and the others (since the drama is in a timeline skip we are not able to see it)

Well, technically losing the ability to recognize people is losing a part of his memory facilities, but you are right that it wasn't his entire memory that was gone like Eun Gi. I also agree that it happened because he wanted to start a new life. That's what I liked about the ending, all I wanted was for Ma Roo and Eun Gi to be happy together :)
Deletehmmm like I said .. Maru did not lose any single point of his memory.. he just cant recognize who is who like jaegil eungi and the others (means he know who is eungi but cannot recognize the face).. and eun gi is different she definitely lose all her memories ..

DeleteHah, I saw that opening credits scene where Maru smiled.. and the clock actually went FORWARD this time, instead of counter-clockwise. I may not have liked how rushed the overall ending was.. but I do think this drama did had some incredible writing/directing features - to take a basic and very familiar revenge drama, and turn it into something that seemed fresh, is quite a feat. :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think this drama really captured a lot of people's hearts. I think I loved the ending because I was so glad that it didn't end with a tragedy. I try not to be disappointed when there isn't a happy ending to a drama, but I always am. I guess I just love a happy ending.

ReplyDeletedid anyone else notice that final scenes were shot in the SAME locations as paddam paddam?? they used the same buildings but dressed up like yu wouldn't notice,lol.
ReplyDeleteI'm watching Padam Padam right now (I'm on ep 18), and now that you mention it I think you may be right. I notice a lot of locations look similar between kdramas, but I guess South Korea is a fairly small area. I think the tree in Can You Hear My Heart is the same as the one in the final scene of Faith, but I haven't really researched it.
DeleteI cried a lot watching this drama even the part where Han Jae Hee and Kang Ma Roo were in the park together. I felt sorry for both of them and that scene just boke my heart epecially for Ma Roo. I know I should be hating Jae Hee since that's what her character is made to be but there are times that I just can't help feeling sorry for her. About the ending I'm glad that it was a happy one but I just wish there was more to it. Kdramas really have the knack of leaving the audience somewhat hanging. I mean there is an ending to it (may be happy or sad) but most of the time it's just not enough. It's like there's still a lot of questions left unanswered, like you're supposed to figure out or even make your own ending just to keep you satisfied. Nevertheless I still love kdramas and this ( The Innocent Man ) for me is the best one among all the melodrama genres so far. :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, the ending was a bit rushed, but not as bad as other endings (like Big and City Hunter). I watched Innocent Man for the second time a few weeks ago, and I enjoyed it even more. Joong Ki and Chae Won are so glorious! I hope Joong Ki makes another drama soon, but I think I read that he's volunteering for military service... I'm not sure, though.
DeleteI agree. Joong Ki should make another drama soon 'coz he's really good at what he's doing. Hoping to see him in a romanic comedy kind of story. However, if he does go to serve the military, I'm pretty sure we'd all still be here (excitedly waiting) by the time he comes back and support him all the way. I know I would. :)
DeleteBy the way, going back to the ending of Innocent Man. Am I right in thinking that Eun Gi gave up her wealth since she's now living simply near Ma Roo in a village where she has her bakeshop and that Jae Hee after coming out of prison still had Tae San Group (or at least what's left of it)? I mean seeing her (Jae Hee) at the last part where she wanted to see Ahn Min Yong(?), I think she was still pretty well off. What do you think?
DeleteHmmmm... yeah it seemed like Jae Hee was still rich in the end. That's one thing that did bother me. I get that Eun Gi would want to just live happily with Ma Roo without the Tae San drama, but that was her father's legacy and she fought to protect it at first. I guess her love for Ma Roo was greater than her love for that legacy, though. I think Eun Gi was so high strung that she probably would have gotten sick had she remained at Tae San. I was just so happy that Ma Roo and Eun Gi had a happy ending together.

Nice Guy is awesome! But I think the writer didn't state if Eun Gi knew that lawyer Park's father was the one who was involed in Eun Gi's mother accident... :/

DeleteI just finished watched this drama, and I am so puzzled about the end, I am really curious whether the last part at village is actually another life, another people because he kept saying * in next life*, because there is no line stated that the Doctor is Kang Ma Ru n that Unni is Eun Gi, even he said that he was having big surgery before, and went to study medic in US and having prognasia. But then when the Doctor a.k.a Ma Ru give the ring actually summarize all my concern that he do have prognasia, and then the end he do remember everything, and as another commenter, Miracle said that the background talking actually present life, It's really a relief for me that it end so well, but honestly I hope for more * sigh

I haven't watched any episode yet but thanks for the review. At least I'm assured that not 1 of the lead characters died. I don't like UNhappy endings in tv dramas or movies. Real life is already dishing that out.

ReplyDeleteThanks for this review. I've just watched Song Joong Ki (SJK)'s 2016 drama, Descendants of the Sun and having massive withdrawal since he's yet to be having any new drama/ movies after his 2017 wedding.
ReplyDeleteNow that I noted from your replies & reviews that Innocent Man is not having any main character dying off in the ending, so I may safely watch it. Really need some good SJK past dramas to pull myself together from my withdrawal of his No.1 Korea top rated drama. Way to go~~SJK performance is not just getting better from My Werewolf Boy & Sungkyunkwan Scandal era...as he is awesome now~!
