The Best Korean Dramas of 2013

Annyeong! It has been a hot minute since I've posted last, but here I am sharing my year's Korean drama-watching work. This year there was a good assortment of dramas to suit viewers' varying taste buds. This year also featured some of the most hyped Kdramas ever (Gu Family Book and The Heirs). Even though I found some great dramas to watch in 2013, not every drama was watchable. So, look forward to my "The Worst Korean Dramas of 2013" list in a few days. But, let's get back to positivity and celebration for now. Here's to an even better year for dramas in 2014!

5. That Winter, the Wind Blows

Jo In Sung and Song Hye Kyo
That Winter, the Wind Blows was the first, what I consider, "blockbuster" drama of the year. It features Jo In Sung, Song Hye Kyo, Jung Eun Ji, and Kim Bum. The music was divine (download the OST here), the aesthetic was soft and breathtaking, and this drama, while not the best of the year, was never dull. Read my full review here.

4. Good Doctor

Joo Won and Moon Chae Won
Good Doctor fills the void of feel good medical drama better than any I've seen before. The chemistry between Joo Won and Moon Chae Won made the fact that Park Shi Won (Joo Won) was autistic seem like just another obstacle that any couple faces. I am pretty sure that I cried at least once during each of the 20 episodes of this sweet drama.

3. The Heirs

Lee Min Ho as Kim Tan and Park Shin Hye as Cha Eun Sung

When I first started watching The Heirs/ The Inheritors, I was in disbelief. I had a hard time accepting that Lee Min Ho was still playing a high school kid (he's 26 now!). I was also put off by the strange scenes that they filmed in California. I decided to let my skepticism go, though, and allow the story to wash over me. This drama is a blatant combination of all things that viewers want to see, rich kids, love triangles, birth secrets, Cinderella story, coming-of-age, I could go on for pages. What I think makes this drama great, though, is that the actors managed to shine through the achingly cliche plot lines and dialogue to show us genuine feeling and the pain that comes with transitioning from childhood to adulthood no matter how rich or poor you are. Also, the sheer volume of popular Korean actors is enough to make my list, The Heirs had Lee Min Ho, Park Shin Hye, Kim Woo Bin, Kang Min Hyuk, Krystal Jung, Choi Jin Hyuk, Lim Ju Eun, Kim Ji Won, and Kang Ha Neul... MIND BLOWN.

2. Heartless City

Jung Kyung Ho and Nam Gyu Ri
Heartless City/ Cruel City was the drama that I looked forward to watching the most every week while it aired. It was the most exciting and sexiest drama of the year, in my opinion. It wasn't, though, an epic romance drama. There was a strong connection between the two leads Jung Kyung Ho and Nam Gyu Ri, but it seemed more like a plot-driving relationship than an a heart-wrenching love like the one from my number 1 drama of the year. Read my full review of Heartless City here.

1. Secret

Hwang Jung Eum and Ji Sung
Ahhh yes, Secret Love, what year of drama isn't complete without a high-intensity melodrama? My year certainly wouldn't have felt complete without Secret. Hwang Jung Eum pulled off her best performance yet as the wronged Kang Yoo Jung who lost years of her life in prison, her son, and her bright-eyed optimism. Yet, she was able to love again and make the best decision for herself and her child. I just loved this drama and it's fast moving action and romance.

30 Day Kdrama Challenge: Day 19 Your Favorite Actor

Day 19: Your Favorite Actor

Lee Min Ho in Faith
Imja!!! Well, there isn't much to think about for day 19. Lee Min Ho is definitely me favorite Korean actor. It's not just his acting skills that draw me in; his whole persona is magnetic. He is beyond gorgeous, he has cute quirks, he can sing, he can act, he is tall, he has a great speaking voice... the list really goes on and on. My favorite drama of his is Personal Taste. He is hilarious as a prickly character who tries to act cool on the outside, but is actually very soft and gentle inside. He is perfection! 30 Day Kdrama Challenge: Day 14

Day 14: Your Favorite Kiss

This is still my favorite kiss, yes, I'm referring to the "game over" kiss from episode 11 of Personal Taste. After a heartfelt confession from Son Ye Jin's character Gae In, Lee Min Ho's character Jin Ho marches right up to her with his long, sexy legs, and he kisses in a super dramatic and romantic fashion. The music, the spinning camera angles, the shocked looks on the by standers faces make this scene so perfect and unforgettable. Watch Personal Taste free and subtitled on DramaFever

30 Day Kdrama Challenge: Day 7

Day 7: Your Favorite Line(s) by a Male Lead Character

Honestly, I am not good at remembering lines and quotes (especially when I am reading it instead of hearing it), so I will talk about a drama that had a lot of good lines in it. I think Lee Min Ho's character Jeon Jin Ho had quite a dew funny lines in Personal Taste. Both times I have watched this drama, I LOLed during the scenes when Jin Ho was teaching Gae In (Son Ye Jin) how to be a woman. She is such a hopeless slob, and he is such an uptight prima donna that he has to use some brutal tactics from his "gay" arsenal to instruct her.

Upcoming 2013 Korean Dramas

Well, we are almost halfway through the year, and it is basically summertime. A new batch of Korean dramas just started, including: Shark, I Hear Your Voice, Nail Shop Paris, Dating Agency: Cyrano, Monstar, and Hearltess City. In this post, though, I want to mention a few upcoming Kdramas that I am looking forward to. As we all know, everything must come to an end, but in the Korean drama world the end of one means the start of a possibly amazing new drama.

Kyung Soo Jin
source: koreandrama.org
Eun Hee

Links: AsianWiki, Han Cinema
Cast: Kyung Soo Jin (Shark) and Lee Jun (The Slave Hunters)
Begins: June 24th, 2013
Thoughts: It basically sounds like hundreds of other Korean dramas involving birth secrets, a jealous girl, and a love triangle. I liked Kyung Soo Jin's acting as the young Hae Woo in Shark, so I am considering watching this drama, but I am not 100% sold just based upon the information I found so far.

Moon Gun Young
source: viki.com
Jung Yi, the Goddess of Fire

Links: AsianWiki, Han Cinema, Couch Kimchi
Cast: Moon Gun Young (Cheongdamdong Alice, Mary Stayed Out All Night) and Lee Sang Yoon (Life is Beautiful)
Begins: July 2013
Thoughts: This is a sageuk about the first woman who worked with ceramic in the Joseon era. It sounds like it could either be incredibly boring or epic and interesting.

Kim Jae Won
source: soompi.com
Scandal

Links: AsianWiki, Han Cinema
Cast: Kim Jae Won (Can You Hear My Heart, May Queen) and Jo Yoon Hee (Nine, Lie to Me)
Begins: July 2013
Thoughts: It could be interesting. The plot is set around Jae Won as a detective who finds out his father kidnapped him. I will try it because I like Jae Won, hopefully it's better than the last drama he was in, May Queen.

Lee Jun Ki
source: photucket
Two Weeks

Links: AsianWiki, Han Cinema
Cast: Lee Jun Ki (Arang and the Magistrate, My Girl) and Kim So Yeon (IRIS 2, The Great Seer)
Begins: August 2013
Thoughts: It sounds right up my alley. It's going to be about a man who is framed for murder and finds out he has a daughter with leukemia, and he spends two weeks trying to save her. I think Lee Jun Ki will be great in a role like this. I am looking forward to it!

Sung Dong Il and Lee Il Hwa
source: facebook.com
Answer Me 1994

Links: Drama Beans, AsianWiki, Han Cinema, The Drama Corner
Cast: so far Sung Dong Il and Lee Il Hwa (the parents from Answer Me 1997)
Begins: Fall 2013
Thoughts: Answer Me 1997 was one of the best dramas of 2012, so I think many drama fans are excited about what the sequel will be. So far there is no definite information, but it looks like it may start airing this fall.

Lee Min Ho and Park Shin Hye
source: vingle.net
The Heirs

Links: AsianWiki, Han Cinema, DramaFever Blog
Cast: Lee Min Ho (Boys Over Flowers, Faith), Park Shin Hye (You're Beautiful, Flower Boy Next Door) Choi Jin Hyuk (Gu Family Book, Panda and Hedgehog)
Begins: Fall 2013
Thoughts: I need more Lee Min Ho in my life. I have been listening to his album My Everything, but I need some visuals too. One thing I'm skeptical about is that this drama may be about rich high school students. Lee Min Ho is older than me, and I don't think he looks old, but he can't pull off acting as a high school student anymore. We'll see...

Please comment here or contact me via email in the side bar and let me know about any other upcoming Korean, Taiwanese, Japanese, etc. dramas that you are excited to watch.

The Best Kdrama Couples

In honor of Valentine's day, since I have nothing better going on of course, I present you with my list of the best couples from the Korean dramas that I have watched. I am focusing on the main couples involving the lead characters for now, but I plan on making a list later of the best side-character couples because they can't be quite good as well (for example: Lee Jae Shin played by Lee Yoon Ji with Ein Shi Kyung played by Jo Jung Suk in The King 2 Hearts).

1. Mi Ho and Cha Dae Woong

Shin Min Ah and Lee Seung Gi are perfect together in My Girlfriend is a Gumiho. I have watched it 3 times, and I just bought the DVD set on Amazon. Needless to say, this is my all- time favorite drama. The video to left features my favorite scene from the show (ignore the subtitles unless you read whatever language that is) when Dae Woong gives Mi Ho a recharge by telling her that he really really really really really likes her. Tears well up in my eyes a bit just from watching that little clip. DramaFever.com.

2. Kim Na Na and Lee Yoon Seong

Out of all of the dramas that Lee Min Ho has starred in, I think his coupling with Park Min Young in City Hunter makes the most sense. They are a very attractive couple, and I don't think I would have liked the drama as much if it were two different people. Na Na and Yoon Seong hardly had a chance to love each other in a normal way, but the rare intimate moments that they shared were made sweet by the adorable actors filling those roles. Watch it on DramaFever.com.

3. Go Nam Soon and Park Heung Soo

Lee Jong Suk and Kim Woo Bin are the "it" couple in the Korean drama world right now, so I can't fail to include them in my list. Their touching friendship in  School 2013 fueled the main emotional vein of the drama. In the interview that I have included here they basically sum it up by stating that they had great acting chemistry together and that they have known each other since they were young. Their love story is beyond the typical cheesy romance because watching them as Nam Soon and Heung Soo is like experiencing the ups and downs of a real friendship. Watch it on DramaFever.com.

4. Choi Hee Jin and Kim Bong Do

I say "fighting!" to this couple because they are still dating in real life. Yoo In Na and Ji Hyun Woo are so genuine and adorable in this Queen In-Hyun's Man, that it's hard not to get sucked in and ignore the nonsensical time travel aspects of it. The video I have included has some cute moments with Lee Seung Gi's "Losing My Mind" playing in the background which reminds me of My Girlfriend is a Gumiho and makes me smile. Watch it on DramaFever.com.

5. Seo Eun Gi and Kang Ma Roo

I would like to categorize Moon Chae Won and Song Joong Ki in Innocent Man (Nice Guy) as the best "worst" couple. The two of them were a pair of fucked up kooks that put each other through hell, but I couldn't help rooting for them. Chae Won and Joong Ki look so good together even when they are beating the physical and mental shit out of each other and themselves that it makes the story more romantic than it actually should be. Watch Innocent Man DramaFever.com.

BONUS COUPLE: You + Lee Min Ho! Let's all take a moment (or twenty) and pretend that we are celebrating a romantic V-day in Seoul with Lee Min Ho, shall we?

The Best Korean Drama of 2012: Revisiting Rooftop Prince

Park Yoo Chun as Lee Gak and Han Ji Min as Park Ha
I originally watched Rooftop Prince while it was airing March 21st through May 24th of last year. Each week I was freaking out while I had to wait for new episodes because I loved it so much. I recall watching the last 5 episodes or so and crying the whole time. As I was watching it, I had already planned on watching it again all together down the road. Sure enough, I was stricken with the unavoidable desire to watch  Rooftop Prince last week, and I am very glad that I did.

***SPOILERS BELOW***

I have watched My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, Coffee Prince, and Personal Taste all twice each, so I already knew going into it that I can enjoy a drama when I watch it more than once. I didn't expect I would such an intense reaction like I did to watching Rooftop Prince again, though. One would assume that knowing everything that happens and how it will end before hand may ruin the suspense, but I gained a whole new perspective on the drama this time around. Since I already knew that Prince Lee Gak (Park Yoo Chun) and Park Ha (Han Ji Min) were going to end up loving each other, I started getting emotional from episode one. As soon as I saw the dead corpse floating in the water and I knew it was Boo Yong, I started to feel sad. The drama takes on a whole new meaning when watched from the perspective of knowledge as opposed to ignorance of the plot.

When I started to think about the fact that Lee Gak went back to Joseon where Boo Yong was dead, the princess and her family had tried to kill him, and he wouldn't be able to live with Park Ha, I felt my heart breaking. I think that watching it for a second time also shed light on the significance of the final scene of the show. The scene, which flashes from Yoo Chun as Yong Tae Yong (Lee Gak's reincarnation) with Park Ha to Tae Yong in Joseon garb appearing as Lee Gak, was very confusing but beautiful to me the first time I saw it. Now that I have watched the entire drama twice, I think I have a better idea of what that scene means. Lee Gak/Tae Yong loves Boo Yong/Park Ha and vice versa. It is a very simple answer, but I was thinking of it too literally the first time around and trying to figure out if Lee Gak had come back from Joseon to be with Park Ha. What I believe now, though, is that just as Boo Yong had loved Lee Gak 300 years before and then again as her reincarnation, Park Ha in present time, Tae Yong fell in love with Park Ha via their souls' eternal connection. I really love this story because I can imagine them being reincarnated to infinity and still finding each other.

Choi Woo Sik, Lee Min Ho, and Jung Suk Won
Of course, I cannot fail to mention the prince's posse. Lee Min Ho (1993) as Song Man Bo, Choi Woo Sik as Do Chi San, and Jung Suk Won as Woo Yong Seul are perfect. During my initial viewing I hadn't noticed how quickly they picked up on the ways of the contemporary world. It amuses me that these Joseon men could learn to master smart phones in such a short period of time, but many people who have lived in this time period all of their lives can't figure them out. I understand that these characters are not real, but the portrayal of them becoming technology whizzes was hilarious to me when I relate it to the stupid people I deal while working in tech support.

In essence Rooftop Prince is one of those rare shows/movies that I could watch over and over again without getting tired of it and also pick up new things each time. I am already planning to watch it again in another 8 or 9 months. So, to those who loved Rooftop Prince the first time around, I suggest you watch it another time and experience the ecstasy all over again. Watch it on DramaFever.com.

The Perfect Korean Drama

This summer I started to jot some ideas down for what I would like to see in a Kdrama. I never really went anywhere with it, and I only listed out a few bullet points, but I have been wanting to elaborate on that idea for months. Since the holidays are nearing and things are slowing down at work, I decided that I will start creating my idea of the perfect Korean drama. I don't know how far I will go with it, but I feel ambitious about this project at the moment. I will post continuously as I come up with more. Now, clearly it will all be written in English by an American person, so I guess it would be more accurate to say that I will be writing a Korea-style drama, and, obviously, it will star my favorite Korean celebrities.

Here are my ideas so far:

  • I want to see Onew in a Kdrama, so he WILL be in mine. That's the first and most important idea that I came up with. I think that Lee Jin Ki is adorable and funny, and I want to see him in a Korean drama ASAP. He will also have at least 2 songs on the OST.
Lee Jin Ki aka Onew of SHINee

  • I need Moon Chae Won. What female Kdrama fan wouldn't go gay for Moon Chae Won? Anyway, I digress. In my drama Chae Won will play an actress, and I want her to refer to the Chaeki ship in a funny way.

Moon Chae Won as Seo Eun Gi
  • Song Joong Ki will make a cameo appearance. Now, I should be saying that I want him to star in my drama, right? Well, I think that it would be cooler if he made a cameo as himself and has an encounter with Moon Chae Won who is portraying an actress who has a crush on him and wants to work with him, but she isn't making progress in the acting world yet.... something like that.
Song Joong Ki as Kang Ma Ru
  • Lee Min Ho will be the lead and will have sexy kissing scenes with Moon Chae Won. This seems so obvious to me that I didn't even list it first. So, to clarify, I want Onew in my drama, but I don't foresee him as a lead actor, not yet anyway.
Lee Min Ho
  • I want the drama to start in Seoul, but end up in the country. I love the beautiful scenery and the interesting country-folk characters.
  • At first I thought I wanted a supernatural element (because I enjoy them) like in those time-travel or body-swapping Kdramas (see Rooftop Prince and Secret Garden), but I changed my mind on that, at least for now. The great thing about a Kdrama is that the supernatural element could also come in later.
  • I want it to be funny and dramatic, but not depressing. What really turns me off about some romantic comedies is that they get too dark and sad around the end. Some dramas balance this well (like Dream High and Coffee Prince) while others make it unbearable (my example is Starts Falling From the Sky, it became way too depressing and not funny).
Here are some dramas that mine will be inspired by: Invincible Lee Pyung Kang, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, Innocent Man (very slightly), The Vineyard Man, Answer Me 1997.

Shin Min Ah and Lee Seung Gi in My Girlfriend is a Gumiho

This is all I have for now. I came up with most of this while I was writing it, so some of it probably won't make sense to anyone except for me (even then...), but I hope to work things out as I forge ahead in my grand project.
